Our House Shelter

the shelter: the Shelter is a safe, dormitory-style home for 80 men, women and children. There are two dorms: one for men, and one for women and children. The campus also includes common areas, a dining room, a commercial kitchen, a playground and garden. Clients that first step onto the campus have a three weeks to find a full time job. After that, they are required to maintain a full time position during their stay at Our House. Throughout their time at Our House, they are encouraged to take full advantage of all Our House programs, using the Education, Workforce, Client Services, Case Management, and Childrens Programs to better their chances in sustainability once they leave the programs. In return, Our House residents have a responsibility to pay a small maintenance fee, save most of their earnings, and participate in daily chores. Residents can stay up to two years. They are encouraged to stay at least six months to get the full benefits of the programs. family housing Residents of the Our House Shelter can apply to be part of the Family House, an on-campus apartment style housing program. Family House members enjoy increased privacy, privileges and responsibilities. There are 13 units: each room is for one family, one married couple, or two or three adult roommates. A communal kitchen allows residents to cook their own meals for private family dinners; there is a common living room for relaxing and socializing. This is also where single fathers with children live. To be eligible for Family Housing, you must either be a current Our House resident or a homeless single father with children. Individuals and families apply by filling out the Our House Family Housing application. Acceptance is contingent on Family House availability as well as suitability for the program. The Jacksonville Senior Center had its beginnings in 1974 as the Jacksonville Elderly Activities Program in a single-wide mobile home on Martin Street, near where the Splash Zone stands today. Additional mobile homes were later added to the center. A $400,000 Community Development Block Grant and low interest bonds helped fund the construction of the current Jacksonville Senior Center which opened in May 1984. The property donated by the Bart Gray family of Jacksonville was the site of the former Graco Theatre which they had owned. Today the center provides a place for senior adults to socialize, have a hot meal and stay active. It provides activities and services for any person of age 60 and over.
