About Shelter Plus Care

Administered by the Orange County Health Care Agency, Behavioral Health Services, Residential Care office, the Shelter Plus Care program provides rental assistance to persons who are disabled due to mental illness, substance abuse, or HIV/AIDS; are homeless; and have low income. Clients must participate in a rehabilitation plan that includes registration for case management or client advocacy. Case manager submits application which outlines severity of housing need, ability to live independently, details of rehabilitation plan, and matching supportive services. Preference is given to people who meet the diagnostic categories listed and are chronically homeless. Potential applicants should check with their case managers or client advocates for more information.

My name is Nathan Henderson. I am unemployed and currently disabled due to a servere linguinal Hernia I am scheduled to have an operation on. I have a son who is 8 and we have become homeless. I do not have a working phone, I have relied on Facebook's messenger to speak with family and friends and have used close friends of mine when bbn needing to speak to others. My friend Tiffany can usually let me receive important calls when needed or is able to at least relay messages to me by touching base through that same app whenever she has to. My son and I do receive a little bit of money on a food card and then some on the same card but at a different time of the month. I do not have a car however my son's school has provided me with a month bus pass to get him to school in the morning. My sons mother had a drug addiction that has now gotten her incarcerated and things have become more difficult. I often looked to her for the answers for things with my boy and are finding myself lost in avenues for assistance for our family. I am not sure what is available to help me and my son out right now doing what I can to not become homeless and have my boy taken from me as that would just crush us all. My friend said she might be able to let us stay with her but would need for me to look into assistance to help out as she is not above making ends meet herself. Please send any info that can point me in the right direction. Thank you, Nathan Henderson
