Indian River Senior Center

214 Irons Avenue
Millsboro, DE - 19966
(302)934-8839
The Indian River Senior Center was founded in 1970 by Donald and Florence Mortlock. The original meetings were held at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Millsboro. By the end of 1970 the membership had grown to 75 and consequently had to move upstairs to the larger hall. The Center took steps to incorporate in 1971 and by the end of that year the membership had grown to 150. By the end of 1972 the membership grew to 430 members and the small space became crowded. Due to the growth, the senior Center purchased a parcel of land in the town of Millsboro for their future home. The Senior Center formed a partnership and shared the facilities with the town of Millsboro. The building was completed in mid 1980. The town purchased the property from the Senior Center for the same price that the Senior Center had paid for it. The seniors furnished the building with the necessities and negotiated a lease with the town for 22 years. The agreement stated that the seniors would take care of the maintenance and hall rentals. At the end of the lease the seniors informed the town that it was unable to continue handling the rentals. The new lease was negotiated at that time and we were in a better position to save for our own building. The center provides the following activities for the seniors in our area: aerobics, yoga, line dancing, golf, bowling, crafts including ceramics, card playing, billiards, shuffleboard, and a library. There is lunch provided each Wednesday along with a variety of entertainment, educational programs and bingo. We also offer flu shots, tax preparation and defensive driving for seniors. On April 2009 we moved into our new center that is located behind the WA-WA on route 113 on Irons Avenue. The Center has over 630 members today...

Cape Henlopen Senior Center

11 Christian Street
Rehoboth Beach, DE - 19971
(302)227-2055
The Cape Henlopen Senior Center has thrived since its incorporation in 1966 and membership of 30. We have experienced tremendous growth and many changes during the past 49 years. After having been housed in the American Legion on King Charles Street, our Board of Directors felt that it was time to have a senior center that we could call our own. In 1980 we launched a building fund campaign. It was one of the most aggressive and successful campaigns in lower Delaware. With the help of many, including the Division of Aging, the State, Crystal Foundation, members, friends and the City of Rehoboth Beach who leased us the property on Martins Lawn we raised $300,000. In October of 1981 with a membership of 1100 we opened the doors to a new multi-purpose senior center. In 2007 we were fortunate to have five acres of land donated to us to build a brand new facility. Due to the economy and money restraints we were unable to build. Our goal for the future is to build a state of the art senior center with a multipurpose room to seat 300 to 400 and a swimming pool. Within the Rehoboth, Lewes and surrounding area, the senior population is growing with people 50 years and older. Our membership is now 1230 members residing in Rehoboth, Lewes, Milton, Dewey Beach, Milford, Bethany, Ocean View, Longneck, and Millsboro areas. With many people retiring early, we have already felt the senior population explosion with inadequate space for some of the senior center activities; therefore we must plan for the future to reach goals and objectives to enhance the quality of life of our senior citizens by adding life to years and years to life...
