They have a nutrition program designed to detect nutritionally "at risk" women, infants and children and assistance to prevent low-birth weight and premature infants, iron deficiency anemia, failure to thrive, obesity, etc. WIC serves pregnant, breastfeeding (for one year), and postpartum (for six months) women, as well as infants and children up to five years of age. WIC promotes breastfeeding and provides special nutrition classes, individual counseling, frequent follow up to high risk clients, health assessment, health care and social service referrals, and immunizations.
