CCA's Hillside Family Shelter provides temporary housing (30-60 days) for families who are homeless or poor. A family is defined as a household with at least one child. Hillside Family Shelter works to manage stress and increase focus on obtaining permanent housing and employment. We believe families that are homeless deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, which is an essential first step toward breaking the cycle of homelessness. In addition, we believe that reducing stress in families lives by providing adequate living space will increase their chances of making the initial steps towards self-sufficiency. It is because of these two beliefs that we provide a furnished unit for 30-60 days through a program less burdened with rules and regulations. Services: Housing (30-60 days maximum), case management, food pantry, daycare through LULAC Headstart, Inc.; referrals. Facilities: Sylvan site -10 furnished units; Davenport site 7 furnished units. Units range in size from one room efficiencies to three bedrooms, accommodating a range of family sizes. The MISSION of the Emergency Shelter Management Services, Inc. is to ensure the availability of emergency shelter for men who are in need. Hours of Operation: ESMS is staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. *** The ESMS program specializes in providing shelter and services for homeless men operating a 75-bed facility. Client check-in starts at 4:00 pm and wake up is 7am with all clients departing shelter by 7:30 am. Essential Services: Emergency shelter, hot nutritious meal (dinner), showers, clothing and personal care items for men who are homeless. Free community service telephone and answering machine for residents: One incoming line that is dedicated to residents for employment, housing,and family/personal reasons. Services - Resettlement: Services include provision of housing, furniture, food, clothing, and other material needs. In addition, Iris assists refugees in obtaining Social Security cards and medical examinations, enrolls children in school, provides community and cultural orientation and guides refugees in negotiating the many institutions with which they will come into contact. Iris hosts a daily English class, and provides a childcare / school readiness program for young children whose parents are in the class.***Job Assistance: Refugees are highly motivated and authorized to work immediately upon arrival. Since the Iris program is designed to foster early self-sufficiency, employment is a critical milestone in the resettlement process. Iris works hard to promote refugee clients to area employers and to prepare clients for entry-level employment.***Case Management and Support Services: Iris provides referral, translation, transportation, crisis intervention, and counseling services. These services are available to refugees resettled by Iris, refugees who have moved to Connecticut from other states, and asylees resident in the state.***Education: Many school-aged refugee children have never entered a classroom before coming to the US. As a result, these newcomers encounter a host of obstacles to achieving academic success. Iris works to remove barriers by providing children with intensive in-school and after-school tutoring assistance, as well as a summer school program. Iris also holds classes for parents to equip them to become active participants in their childrens education.***Learning English: IRIS is an authorized provider of New Haven Adult Education (NHAE) ESOL program. NHAE ESOL teachers instruct three levels of English lessons daily at the IRIS office. We assist them with water utility assistance through the Dollar Energy Fund, as well as provide them with food and holiday assistance (food, clothing, and toys). Through our Citadel, we use volunteers to assist in stocking our pantry, sorting clothing, packing food, and collecting clothing and toys, as well as aiding in distribution.*** Diaper Bank Program: We also operate a "Diaper Bank" to assist families with little children on a weekly basis. The diapers come from The Diaper Bank, which centralizes the fundraising and distribution of free diapers to poor families through existing service providers, including local food pantries, soup kitchens, daycare centers, social service agencies and shelters. Through its extensive Diaper Distribution Network of 66 agencies, The Diaper Bank provides free diapers to poor and low-income families in New Haven, Bridgeport, Hartford, and Middlesex County. ***Holiday Programs: We distributed 1820 toys and 630 items of clothing to 646 children (317 families). We visited 848 people in local nursing and convalescent homes, including 175 at the VA Medical Center.
